Tidbits about Grade 4 in Mrs. Trifiro's room...

How will I know how my child is doing?
First thing, I will contact you if there is a concern, usually by phone or email. We may also have a conference meeting to discuss your child. As always, I welcome any emails, calls, or visits to share important information with you, about your child. Feel free to set up a meeting to just get to know each other. Bring your child with you, if you'd like. Working together is what school is all about.
You will receive "The Friday Folder", a special folder, containing important papers that will occasionally be sent home for you to view, sign, and return, most likely on a Monday. Please sign each assessment or rubric and then place them back inside the folder. Feel free to comment on the paper included inside the folder, because in this way we may communicate about the progress or you may write motivational comments right to your child!
If your child is in my math class, I will send home the assessments, the day they are returned, so that you may see the results. Make sure your child corrects all the errors on a small sticky note and attaches them to the test. Please tell them not to change answers. Corrections are made, so my students can think about any misconceptions they may have. Please guide your child to put the corrected and signed test back into their binders to return to me the very next day.

General Information About
Homework and Just about Everything!
Is there Reading homework? - Students read for a minimum of 2o-25 minutes, each week night. Usually some sort of log will be kept up to date. TBA
Talking about their books is also very important, so frequently ask them about what they are reading and what strategies they are practicing. Thanks parents!
What will my child need to do for Mrs. T's Math class?
- Students complete 2 pages
(and maybe a few circled problems throughout the lesson) each night Monday through Thursday. Math homework assignments will be written down in a planner and will be posted on this website after 5 PM.
When tests are taken, most likely they will be returned, the very next day, or two, and I will pull small groups of children up depending upon their misconceptions. Then, the students must bring the test home, get it signed, and then correct any errors. Of course the very next day, they are to return their signed test to me. All workbooks should be kept in binders and brought back and forth, daily.
What if they just don't understand???
If your child does not understand something for homework, they have many options. They may ask a parent for guidance, or visit the Go Math Site and review it by watching a demonstration video! But, if the problem is too difficult, just write a little note to me and initial it, near that problem, and have your child show it to me before the next class begins. Then I can take them aside or review it for all! For additional math practice, the Go Math website contains a multitude of lessons, videos, and games. So, explore the site with your child! It's wonderful!
Why does "Word Work" mean responsibility?
It is very important to review every night, at home~your child's Language Arts two week requirements. Please help your child succeed by becoming familiar with their new spelling words and new grammar lessons.
Please become an active part of their nightly reviews.
Spelling assignments are part of the daily "word work" routine, in school, and the class will be responsible for using the new information and completing assessments to prove their understanding. It is important to review their spelling words many times before the testing day, every other Friday. Their words should be glued into their notebooks, so their spelling notebooks must be brought back and forth nightly. Their Work Work Notebook is where spelling practice will be done. If a child does not finish their weekly class assignments, they may finish at home, but this is their responsibility.
What exactly is GRAMMAR?
Grammar is very important. Punctuation, Capitalization, and Editing are always being used. There are so many important parts to becoming a strong writer. So about every two weeks the children will be given a new grammar "packet". Please ask them to show you what they are learning. Please make this an important part of your child's day. The students should review, each night, the one concept I have taught them, from the grammar packet. So, the grammar packet should be kept inside their binder at all times.
WRITING: Fiction or Nonfiction, that is the question... All writing is done in school. The students will focus on a certain forms of writing, such as personal narratives, realistic fiction, persuasive and factual essays, or fantasy. You can follow their progress by asking to see their writer's notebook or view their Google Document.
What does Assessment Data really mean?
Teachers instruct with a more personalized approach now, and this means that many pieces of data, collected from many sources, such as: learning logs, pretests, post tests, rubrics, small group instruction, reading inventories, M.A.P.S. results, and teacher observations, are used to measure growth. Organized and structured data collecting and analyzing, allows us to zero in on many important specifics that each of your children may need for educational success. Keeping many logs and utilizing this data, allows us to help your child grow in each subject. It also allows us to use a new form of report card, to present your child's growth, to you, three times a year.
Although we want our 4th graders to become more independent, it's best to check their planners nightly, for up-coming assessments, important reminders, and daily assignments. Thanks!
Why use a Friday or Weekly Folder?
On most Fridays, a special folder will come home and in it you will see some important work, from your child. Certain papers should be shown to parents and all papers need to be discussed and/or corrected. It is requested that the returned papers have a parent's signature on each. Most importantly, this folder must be returned on Monday. Also, the log inside should be signed and dated, every time the folder comes home. Please follow this routine. It is the only homework the children have on the weekends. Thanks!
